Substance abuse is a growing issue all over the United States. In fact, substance use statistics show just how big of a problem alcohol and drug abuse is across the country today.
Five Shocking Substance Abuse Statistics
Before getting into the statistics, it’s important for people to know that substance use and addiction aren’t the same things. When people suffer from addiction, they no longer have control over their actions. With substance use, they choose to abuse a substance, which leads to addiction. Outside influences may push them toward a certain substance, but it’s still their choice in the end.
Binge Drinking Statistics
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says drinking is a problem among people age 18 and older. In 2015, nearly 27% of people between this age range said that they binged within the past month.
Cost of Substance Abuse
Statistics from the National Institute on Drug Abuse show the growing cost of substance use in the United States. It costs the nation over $740 billion a year. These numbers come from statistics between 2007 and 2013.
In 2010, the nation spent over $300 billion on tobacco abuse. People also spent $249 billion on alcohol the same year. In 2007, they spent $193 billion on illicit drug abuse. These numbers include money for treatment, fighting crime and lost work productivity.
Overdose Deaths
Overdoses are also a problem for people who suffer from substance use. Statistics show that overdose deaths are on the rise in the United States. From 2002 to 2015, overdose deaths increased for a number of drugs, including:
- All opiates and opioids
- Heroin
- Benzodiazepines
- Cocaine
Keep in mind that there hasn’t been an increase in overdose deaths for all drugs. However, the drugs on this list continue to cause concern. They also continue to cost the nation billions in treatment expenses.
Alcohol Deaths
Abusing alcohol continues to cost many lives in America. Over 88,000 people die annually from alcohol deaths. In 2014, nearly 10,000 people died as a result of alcohol-impaired accidents.
