A sober living environment is a perfect option for individuals trying to stay sober. Whether you’re currently in an IOP program or have graduated treatment, living with other like-minded individuals is beneficial. It’s important to understand how one of these homes works first. It’s also important to know why this type of living environment is typically necessary.
What is Sober Living?
A sober living environment (SLE) is a home for people who are trying to stay clean and sober. Each SLE is going to be different, but they all have the same basic structure and foundation. Typically SLEs are based on gender, so you’d be in a home with all men or all women. The number of people in this type of home typically depends upon the size of the home as well as what the rehab center thinks will be beneficial for residents.
The idea of an SLE is to give people who want to maintain their sobriety a safe place to live with some accountability. Each home has a house manager who ensures that no drugs or alcohol come in. Depending on the rules of the home, the house manager may ensure that residents meet certain requirements. For example, some homes require 12-step meetings, chores or other obligations. These programs are a great part of a relapse prevention plan.
Life in an SLE
In one of these homes, you’ll have similar freedoms as you would if you lived on your own. While in this home, you can work, go to school and visit friends and family. This is the ideal place to live if you’re transitioning from a inpatient treatment program to outpatient treatment. Some of these homes have curfews, but this helps you begin to live a normal, more structured life.
The benefit of living in one of these homes is that you’re living with an incredible support group. Isolation is bad for anyone who is in recovery because that’s when bad thoughts arise. Being in a house with other men or women who are in recovery gives you people to talk to who have been through a similar situation. No matter what type of day you’re having, you’ll be with people who you can relate and talk to.
When You Don’t Feel Comfortable Going Home
If you go through a inpatient treatment program, it’s important to be open and honest. Your therapist will help you figure out if an SLE is right for you. Many people make the mistake of returning home too quickly and relapse. Some of the reasons you may need an SLE can include:
- Someone in your house is still drinking or uses drugs
- You live in an environment that’s highly stressful
- You still have very strong cravings to drink or use
