Anger Management Treatment in Arizona

As the fastest-growing state in the country, Arizona’s population is diverse and so are the people seeking addiction treatment.

Anger is an emotion everyone experiences. It can range from getting upset at a play the Cardinals make to you and your partner disagreeing over something and shouting about it. Emotions are important to recognize and address so we can healthily work through them, but is there a point when anger becomes a problem?

Arizona residents are no strangers to anger. In fact, in a recent survey, Arizona ranked as the worst state in the US for road rage, with 81% of people reporting experiencing being yelled at while driving.

Here at Pinnacle Peak, we see the mental health needs in our community and offer programs to help meet those needs. One of our specialties is our anger management program. Our team of medical professionals is trained to work with you to set up a plan to help address your concerns.

What We Treat: When Does Anger Require Treatment?

As we mentioned in the beginning, everyone experiences anger. Anger can be a destructive and explosive emotion, however, if it’s not handled properly.

When we experience anger, our bodies release adrenaline in a similar manner to how they respond to stress. Anger can cause a surge of energy, making us feel pent up with a need to release said energy. If you don’t have a set way you handle this surge, it can be easy to lash out verbally or physically in response.

Because of the nature of anger, it has the potential to harm yourself, your surroundings, and even your loved ones if you don’t know how to handle it. If this is the case for you or someone you know, it might be time to consider anger management treatment. Pinnacle Peak offers comprehensive anger management options for those in need.

How We Treat: Crafting a Treatment to Suit Your Needs

No two people have the same history, so why should a treatment program have only one option to address your needs?

We will work with you along the way to ensure you have a say in the planning of your recovery and that you are satisfied with how your treatment is going.

What Causes Anger to Become a “Problem?”

There’s no exact formula that leads to outbursts and uncontrolled anger, but there are several common factors that can play a role. Some people may experience a combination of these factors, while others might only experience one. Please note that this list is not exhaustive and you might have additional or other factors that contribute to your situation.

  • Childhood experiences - One of the biggest contributing factors to uncontrolled anger stems from how we were raised. If someone in your life had outbursts, hitting things, or yelling when they were angry, you can derive your own habits from that. Anger management is a learned skill so if you didn’t have a good point of reference growing up, this can influence how you yourself react to anger.

  • Stress - We mentioned earlier that many of the ways the body reacts to anger are similar to how it reacts to stress. When we’re already dealing with stress, it can make us quicker to anger because of the stress present in our body.

  • Hormones - Our hormones influence our body in many ways. Teens going through puberty might notice mood swings. Women before or during their period might notice they’re more likely to cry. The same thing can happen with anger. Our hormones go through cycles, so pay attention if your anger is experienced at a specific time every month or so. It might be related to hormones.

  • Other mental health conditions - There are many different mental health conditions that have anger as a side effect or can lead to a smaller threshold for anger. Some common ones include depression, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

  • Substance use - Alcohol use disorders can often lead to changes in anger management. Alcohol itself has been shown to influence anger. Other substance use disorders and how they impact your life and body can also cause changes in anger. When both an SUD and uncontrolled anger are present at the same time, this is known as a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis. We offer treatment for dual diagnosis here at Pinnacle Peak, so you can be sure that you’re in good hands.

What Are the Benefits of Anger Management?

Having uncontrolled anger reactions negatively impacts both you and those around you. It can lead to extra stress and contribute to a negative home life. Being able to respond to emotions in a healthy way can help lower your stress and improve your overall mental well-being.

Anger management will help you address potential root causes of your reactions to anger. These root causes can often contribute to other side effects or sources of stress in your life, so addressing them benefits you in multiple ways. During treatment, you will learn skills and be given the tools to face your anger in a healthy and positive way.

How We Approach Anger Management Treatment

While the specifics of our anger management program will look different for each person, we have several core components that we integrate into treatment to set you up for success in your healing.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is utilized in many different treatment programs, including anger. In CBT, you work on identifying both how you think as well as your current behavioral patterns. Within both, you begin understanding the “why” behind your current actions and take the time to relearn them to improve your reactions in the future. During this process, you talk through if your reactions are healthy and also learn how others react to situations differently from you. The end goal is to help you develop a stronger sense of confidence and understanding in both how and why you feel and react to things.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

The core teachings of DBT revolve around understanding and accepting change in yourself and the world around you. DBT is especially helpful in the management of intense emotions and in learning to navigate social situations. During DBT, you will work to address static views and opinions, challenging them against the truth of the fluidity of change in the world around you. It applies this understanding to how our emotions are always fluctuating and changing so you can better react and process these changes as they occur.

Family & Couples Therapy

Family members and other loved ones are just as impacted by uncontrolled anger as the person who is lashing out. It can damage relationships or cause strain. Through family and couples therapy we help you mend these relationships and grow together to understand more about your healing. We want to help address multiple facets of your life, not just the anger itself. By helping heal the relationships with those who matter to you most, we help set you up with a loving support system that understands your situation.

Group Therapy

Mental health and anger can make you feel alone, especially if you’re surrounded by people who haven’t experienced it themselves. This is where group therapy comes into play. In group therapy, you work through many of the same lessons that are offered through individual CBT and DBT treatment, but while around others who are also going through treatment. Group therapy helps provide insight into other people’s lives as well as allows you to connect and realize that you’re not alone in this.
